Recap: The Launch of The Entrepreneurial Experience 2026

On Thursday, March 19, more than 100 students gathered for the very first edition of The Launch of The Entrepreneurial Experience. In the Designlab of the University of Twente (UT), students were introduced to the world of entrepreneurship and discovered what the UT has to offer them. Armed with stories from entrepreneurs who went before them, among other things, these students took the first step on their entrepreneurial journey.

The Entrepreneurial Experience builds upon the foundation of what was formerly known as the UT Challenge. Although the message remains the same, the program has been given a fresh look. It is no longer just a challenge for students who already have a business idea, but an experience for all students who want to know what entrepreneurship entails.

The afternoon was opened by President Vinod Subramaniam. He explained what makes the UT the most entrepreneurial university in the Netherlands, starting with the philosophy of Van den Kroonenberg, resulting in companies like Thuisbezorgd and Booking. But, he emphasized: “Entrepreneurship is not about making tons of money or building a big company. It is about the right attitude and mindset to make an impact. You can therefore also be entrepreneurial by implementing innovative policies within an organization.” With these words, he emphasized how entrepreneurship is deeply embedded in the university's DNA and encouraged students to turn their ideas into impact.

Entrepreneurial DNA

This solidified the message during The Launch: there is an entrepreneur in everyone. During the inspiring panel discussion with Lea Milovich (FlowBeams) and Gabriel Costa (J58), the curious students learned more about setting up their own business, the growth process, and how to grow a small idea into an impactful company. Gabriel concluded the panel with a valuable and summarizing insight: “Entrepreneurship is a rollercoaster with ups and downs, but it is a very fun one. I promise.”

So, what does that entrepreneurial DNA look like for these young entrepreneurs? Through a short quiz, students discovered which traits and drives they already possess. It became clear that entrepreneurship cannot be captured in a single profile. Some entrepreneurs want to build something themselves. Others prefer working in a dynamic team where they contribute to innovative ideas within an existing organization.

A number of partner companies also joined The Launch to share more about the opportunities for entrepreneurial talent within a company. Representatives from Thales, ETC Nederland (representing Hettrix), Topicus & Sensata sat side by side to discuss the skills companies expect from young talent. Entrepreneurship is a mindset they love to see reflected in their organizations. With this, The Launch was a successful and inspiring start to so much more. For many students, this was the starting point of their entrepreneurial journey, which continues in The Entrepreneurial Experience.

The Entrepreneurial Experience

The Entrepreneurial Experience is for any student who wants to experience what it is like to be an entrepreneur, develop practical entrepreneurial skills, and discover new ways of thinking. In various workshops, they learn skills regarding idea formation, business modeling, networking, and pitching, among other things. They also get the chance to look inside leading companies and help brainstorm solutions to their challenges. Subsequently, the students get to work on their own ideas in in-depth workshops, which they pitch during the pitch night. The best ideas advance to the final, where they stand a chance to win a cash prize of €2,500 to further develop their idea.
