Improving and Expanding the Functionality of a Smart Multi-Sensor Pillow for AVM Patients

A patient suffers from arteriovenous malformation (AVM), which can result in blood loss during the night. A 'smart pillow' can detect this, but it also detects other forms of moisture, causing frequent false alarms.

Patients with arteriovenous malformation (AVM) can experience nocturnal blood loss without being aware of it. A 'smart pillow' is capable of detecting this and providing a warning, but it often triggers false alarms because it also detects other forms of moisture. Could a locally smart and intelligent sensor system address this issue, or might other ‘intelligent’ combinations of technical solutions be possible?

Problem Description

The issue originates from the real-life experience of a private family, but the problem affects multiple patients and is therefore of broader societal relevance. Esmee, a 19-year-old from Kampen, was born with an AVM (arteriovenous malformation) in her face. An AVM means there is no capillary network in certain areas of her face. As a result, she frequently experiences bleeding in her nose and mouth. When these bleedings occur at night, she either does not wake up or wakes up too late.

Together with the company Urifoon, a pillowcase has been developed that triggers an alarm when it becomes wet. However, as the patient can also lose lymphatic or wound fluid from her lips, the pillowcase also reacts to this, causing false alarms. A dog has been in training for three years to detect blood, which works well during the day but, unfortunately, not yet at night.

Assignment Description

We are seeking student researchers to develop an improved pillow or an additional product that allows AVM patients to sleep safely through the night. A solution will rely on a combination of intelligent sensors and a clear user protocol.

Profile

We are looking for student researchers who have an affinity for this patient group and possess knowledge of sensor systems and user protocols to adapt and apply them to this specific need.
