UT TechMed Centre gives a boost to valorisation
On the very day that the University of Twente celebrated its 58th birthday, the first and brand new technical medical centre in Europe was also inaugurated: the TechMed Centre.
On the very day that the University of Twente celebrated its 58th birthday, the first and brand new technical medical centre in Europe was also inaugurated: the TechMed Centre. A unique place where the University of Twente brings together talent development, training, scientific research, innovation and a simulation centre. By testing new technology in the pre-clinical phase at this location, technological developments can be accelerated. This provides an incentive for research into new technology and gives a boost to valorisation.
The TechMed Centre was opened last Friday, November 29. His Majesty King Willem-Alexander performed the official opening and was subsequently given a guided tour during which he took the opportunity to speak with students and scientists in the centre. There were also demonstrations given of various technical-medical facilities, such as operating rooms, labs and the e-health house.
Acceleration of technological development in healthcare
A unique research centre where talent development, training, scientific research, innovation and the simulation centre come together under one roof. The TechMed Centre works closely together with a large network of top clinical hospitals, University Medical Centres (UMCs) and the MedTech business community. With this knowledge and cooperation, we can accelerate the application and acceptance of technology in healthcare, which will also lead to a stronger competitive position in terms of economic activity in Europe.
Number of spin-off medical technology companies is increasing
Research has shown that 50% of the recent spin-off companies from the University of Twente have focussed on healthcare applications. Recent spin-offs include LipoCoat, IamFluidics and Machnet Medical Robotics BV. Roy Kolkman, Manager Knowledge & Technology Transfer Novel-T: “The expertise and facilities of the TechMed Centre are essential for the further development and growth of TechMed companies in this region. With the arrival of this centre, the number of spin-offs in medical technology is expected to increase further.”
